When you start visiting properties, there’s a chance that you will feel like one of those characters in a NY sitcom. Suddenly, your life is focused on finding THE ONE. Either the house of your dreams, or at least a cozy apartment to wait inside until you win the lottery. And, like dating, more often than not you will have to face many properties before you settle down for one. Some of them will be amazing but too demanding; other ones will reveal evident deal-breakers; or they will be just weird. And other ones might be your dream come true, only they don’t pick you. That’s why it’s advisable not to depend entirely in good luck: keeping your numbers straight is the first step to make you an eligible candidate!
Here’s how dating resembles home-visiting more than what you could imagine!
1. When you are nervous before ringing each doorbell
Every property you visit could be your next home. Therefore, you want to give a good impression and, at the same time, you are nervous to know how they will be. You are probably trying to put on your best smile and wearing those clothes that scream “Like me! I’m a normal person!”…
2. When you would do anything to impress the sellers
You want to connect with the renter/owner so they remember you. However, you might also want to keep your nerdiness down so they don’t get scared. Trying to impress them is okay, but you shouldn’t tell a pack of lies. If they find out you did, you will have blown your chance!
3. When you are smiling to everything the realtor says and you look even more desperate
The first rule when you’re dating someone: be yourself. Of course you should be nice with the realtor, but don’t hesitate to ask the tough questions. No matter how desperate you are! After all, you don’t want to end up married to the wrong one, right?
4. When you eat all the courtesy cookies
That’s a problem most people face in a first date: I’m hungry and I want the burger, but I don’t want to look like a dinosaur eating its prey. Although I would personally never sacrifice a good meal for a date, my advice is to show restraint when home hunting. The best thing you can do is to resist the temptation and politely take only one or two cookies/coffee cups. First impressions matter, you can have lunch/dinner when you finish!
5. When you notice from the beginning this is a no-go
Pictures don’t always tell the whole truth. Sometimes you will find yourself in a sketchy neighborhood or realize that the property you are visiting is a wreck. Have some self-respect and don’t consider them for a minute! You are better than this!
6. When you keep being disappointed house after house
I know it’s hard, but patience is your best ally (ask Ted Mosby about it!). Visiting properties is very time-consuming, and you might need to find a temporary accommodation in the meantime. But trust me, it’s better to stay a bit longer in your current place when it comes to buy a home. Of course, renting is an entirely different situation, but you shouldn’t do it in a rush either!
7. When you try to stay positive after the dating day and think that they liked you
Being positive is a virtue as long as it doesn’t blind you to reality. And, as some sitcom characters do, you can keep searching even if you have found the property you like, in case negotiations fall through. This way, you will have a backup place that you also kind of liked.
8. When you try to tease information from the realtor
Once you have made an offer, you might get very impatient waiting for an answer. Try to resist the temptation of harassing the realtor with a bunch of texts, or they might choose somebody less annoying!
9. When you are so tired you would just settle for anything without lice right now…
Once again, desperation shows up many times along the process. But remember that the real estate market is very speedy, and new houses start to be on sale/rent every day. So try to keep your hopes up! The home of your dreams exists, you just haven’t met it yet!
10. When you find it
There’s nothing else to say. When you know, you know. Sometimes you will realise at first sight, other times you might take some convincing and a makeover to go for it. But anyway, you can start settling in and making yourself at home!
